February 2019

Pupils from Cathedral Academy spent two days working with The Writing Squad at the National Coal Mining Museum. The residential began with an underground tour of the mine, led by former miners, who the group had chance to interview. This was followed by a series of creative writing exercises The Writing Squad facilitator Andy Cook, inspired by the underground tour and the industrial heritage of mining. The group’s thoughts about their experiences were recorded and made into a soundscape by Andy. The songs are from the Alan Lomax Collection at the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, and used with permission of the Association for Cultural Equity.

The residential features in The Writing Squad’s publication Push Magazine, issue 14.
